Founders Bio

Tom Sweet is not a prepper who watched a disaster unfold on television and decided to write a book about it. He is a man who has stood in the ruins of collapsed systems — in combat zones, in hurricane-leveled neighborhoods, in communities where the grid went dark and the supply chain simply stopped — and watched with his own eyes what happens to the people who were not ready.

What he saw changed everything.

Forged in the Field

Tom’s preparation for the Collapse Ready mission began long before the brand existed. It started with a uniform.

As a Combat Infantryman with over a decade of service, Tom learned early what most civilians never have to confront: that the thin layer of order and comfort we call modern civilization is genuinely fragile, that the people tasked with protecting it are finite in number, and that when the situation goes sideways, the people who survive are the ones who prepared before the crisis — not during it.

After his military service, Tom transitioned into the world of Private Military Contracting, deploying to some of the most volatile environments on the planet — Iraq, Africa, and Central America — from 2001 to 2007. It was during that period that his understanding of threat environments, improvised logistics, and human behavior under extreme stress was sharpened to a professional edge.

That career ended in 2007 when an IED blast in Iraq took the decision out of his hands.

When the Blast Clears, You Adapt

Most men would have stepped back from the hard world after that. Tom stepped sideways.

Drawing on over fifteen years of experience as a Paramedic — a career run in parallel with his contracting work and military service — Tom moved into Private Security Contracting in disaster areas, deploying to some of the worst natural disasters to hit American soil in modern history. He provided security for hospitals, fuel tankers, and field clinics in environments where law enforcement was overwhelmed, infrastructure had ceased to function, and everyday citizens were left to fend for themselves with whatever they had on hand.

He was on the ground from Hurricane Katrina through Hurricane Ian, and nearly every major disaster declaration in between.

What he witnessed at those scenes — the fear, the desperation, the entirely preventable suffering of families who had no plan, no supplies, and no skills — became the defining mission of his post-career life.

The Real Cost of Being Unprepared

Tom has seen what a collapsed grid looks like from the inside. He has worked security at hospitals running on generator power with dwindling fuel, watching staff make impossible triage decisions because supply trucks couldn’t get through. He has watched families wade through floodwater carrying nothing — no food, no water filtration, no medication — because they genuinely believed it would never happen to them.

He has also seen the other side: the households that weathered the same storm with their dignity intact. Families with stored food, clean water, medical supplies, a plan, and the training to execute it. Those families didn’t need rescuing. They became resources for their neighbors instead of liabilities to the system.

That contrast — repeated across dozens of deployments and disaster zones — is the entire reason Collapse Ready exists.

The Collapse Ready Household Series

Tom founded Collapse Ready Publications with a straightforward mandate: build the preparedness library he wished every one of those unprepared families had owned before the storm hit.

The result is the Collapse Ready Household Series — a comprehensive, no-filler collection of soon-to-be nineteen operational manuals covering the full spectrum of collapse-scenario survival. Advanced first aid and field medicine. Wilderness survival and land navigation. Urban movement through contested environments. Water sourcing and filtration. Long-term food storage. Home defense. Off-grid power generation. Grey man tactics. Communications. And much more.

Every title is built the way a field manual should be — around Standard Operating Procedures, real-world scenario examples, and skills that translate from the page to actual execution under pressure. Tom writes from the perspective of someone who has used these skills in environments where failure had consequences measured in lives, not inconveniences.

The series is not written for armchair theorists. It is written for real households — working families who want to protect what they’ve built, who understand that the world is less stable than it was, and who are willing to put in the work to be genuinely ready when systems fail.

Home Base

When he is not writing, Tom lives what he teaches. He and his wife Tiffany are raising their five mostly-grown kids on a few acres in the Piedmont region of North Carolina — along with five dogs, five cats, a flock of chickens, the occasional rabbit, and a ball python who apparently didn’t get the memo about being an unusual household pet.

The property runs as a working homestead — a living laboratory for the same off-grid and self-sufficiency principles that fill the pages of the Collapse Ready series. It is not a show farm. It is a functional, operational household built on the principle that dependence on fragile systems is a liability, and that real security comes from skills, community, and preparation — not from hoping the grid stays on.

The Mission, Simply Stated

Tom does not believe the world is ending. He believes the world has always been dangerous, that disruption has always been possible, and that ordinary families have always had the ability to protect themselves — if someone would just give them the right information in the right format.

That is what Collapse Ready is. That is what every book in the series is built to deliver.

When Systems Fail — We Don’t.
